“‘Every individual is a unique manifestation of the Whole, as every branch is a particular outreaching of the tree.’ ~ 𝘼𝙡𝙖𝙣 𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙨
Sunday morning. Thus far I have configured a high performance Intel cloud computer in The Netherlands running Cent OS to run on Cloudlinux, allowing for local virtualised environments. I have upgraded the Apache webserver which now runs on LiteSpeed. I have done this all through a command line interface. I had no idea how to do any of these things at the start of the year. Sometimes I forget that I am a surgeon, a meditation teacher but I NEVER forget that I am a father (gotta go shopping) and I never forget that I Am.

“We all experience moments of happiness which are accompanied by a perception of expansion and relaxation. Before this body perception, we were in a state of timelessness, an unadulterated, causeless joy of which the physical sensation is simply the ultimate consequence. This joy perceives itself. At that moment, we were not a limited body in space, not a person. We knew ourselves in the immediacy of the moment.” ~ Francis Lucille

Give your attention to the feeling of existence, the feeling of being, the present moment, the Now or whatever you want to refer to it as. They all refer to the same thing. That element of your experience that has never changed and doesn’t come and go.
Self abidance taken from the Sanskrit Atma Vichara is the essence of meditation. Stay in that space as much as you can. 🙏

Whatever job we do, we face our own uniques stresses and pressures. The way that we work and the way we interact with people having changed significantly in the last couple of hundred years. We see now, how stress plays a major factor in the aetiology as well as the recovery of many modern diseases. For many of us, the momentum of thoughts that we bring home with eats up into the time that we should be mentally resting and recuperating and be preparing for sleep.

In the absence of an organic condition causing insomnia, if you are having difficulty sleeping then it almost certainly due to the momentum of thought, lying still one may observe the fleeting thoughts often changing rapidly. It is not until the momentum has lessened do we have any chance of having meaningful sleep.

This is often perpetuated by the use of smartphone or other devices that simply feed fuel to the thinking mind.
Recognition of this as a cause for insomnia is empowering as it allows you to manage a potentially distressing condition without the need for drugs. If you are thinking about starting a meditation practice, consider doing this after returning from work or just before you sleep.

You don’t need to be a regular meditator to benefit from the insights gained from this millennia old practice. One of these insights is that for many of us, there is a constant arising of thought that occurs in the background, often subconsciously from the moment we wake to the time (we try) to sleep. The momentum of thought is often the causative factor in insomnia for most healthy adults.

Tech companies recognise this problem is exacerbated by multimedia devices especially smartphones. Some actually include breathing timers to promote conscious breathing. Conscious breathing is the most often used ‘anchor’ in meditation. An anchor is something that helps return you to the present moment whilst meditating, especially if you become lost in thought. If you are breathing consciously, you are in the present moment - it is impossible not to be. However we don’t often recognise that we are lost in thought. Minutes even hours can be essentially ‘wasted’ ruminating over past occurrences or in anticipation of future events (such as the end of the shift, all this time taking you away from the inherent peace of the present moment.

To break up this continual stream of thought will give it less momentum, thereby less ability to affect your mood, your interactions with others and your perceptions of the world.

We just need to be reminded to return to the present moment. So today, why not, if you (like me) work in hospitals with these antiquated systems try, every time you here a bleep, to breath consciously, giving your breath the fullest attention for 5-10 inhalations/exhalations.
It costs nothing to do, will take virtually no time and you can say it is in the name of science, a (self) observational study. See for yourself the difference it can make.

We have a precious gift called attention. Sadly this gift, for many, is woefully untrained. Very little ‘attention’ is given to it in early years education and it’s often only later on in life when adults look to self help that this area may be explored.

At any given moment we have to choice to place our attention on any aspect of our individual human experience - these may be perceptions of the world through the five senses, the perception of our body and our thoughts (verbal or in the form of mental images). For most of us, thoughts have an almost magnetic draw. If you have sat in silence in meditation, you will have experienced how the smallest thought ‘bubble’ that arises, can, in a matter of moments turn into a tumultuous wave of thought completely overshadowing the present moment. If this is seen during a restful aware state such as meditation, consider that for most of us, this occurs almost continuously from the moment we wake to the time we sleep. Unchecked it dictates our actions and interactions and changes our perceptions of the world, all unknowingly and in the background. We ruminate over past events or live and work in anticipation of future events such as the end of a shift which paradoxically seems to elongate time and appears to make it pass more slowly.

Once you start a regular practice of meditation, it becomes clear that probably over 99% of your thoughts are completely useless and take you out of the peace of the present moment and can be safely ignored! The remaining less than 1% will be what we consider ‘inspired’ thought and these kinds of thoughts are not easily forgotten.

In meditation the most common ‘anchor’ to return you to the present moment is conscious breathing. To give each breath your fullest attention. This only need be observed for five to ten inhalations/exhalation, but anything that disrupts the constant stream of thought will have cumulative benefit. So do this with regularity. Many smartphones and watches have breathing timers to give regular reminders, so think about setting an hourly one and take a few moments just to take some time out and breathe.

Many beginners who sit in meditation for the first time are often overwhelmed by the intensity of the thoughts and often say they ‘can’t meditate’ because their mind is too busy. The first response would be - everyone can meditate without exception. The second response is usually, that’s an excellent recognition.
In modern life, this almost broken stream of thoughts is running in the background, affecting mood, our interactions with people and also the world, for most this ‘chatter’ is left unchecked and impulses arising from the chatter often guide our actions subconsciously.
Those who persist in sitting with their thoughts come to see that this constant ‘bubbling’ of thought is incoherent, irrelevant, broken and often random. Our reasoning or intellect grasps one of these thoughts and creates a story out of this which often perpetuates itself until the next ‘important’ thought arises forming the basis for a new story.
It’s not that we can stop our thoughts but meditation does help us recognise their absurdity and we find gradually that we give our thoughts less attention. This creates a natural ‘space’ to be responsive rather than reactive and bring as back to the present moment which is where our attention should lie.
So if you have faced this ‘difficulty’ with meditation, it’s actually a very positive recognition. meditation helps us appreciate the rich world that we live in and it is worth persisting if you have a genuine interest. In the worlds of the Chinese philosopher Lau Tzu:
‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.’

When I understand myself, I understand you, and out of that understanding comes love. Love is the missing factor; there is a lack of affection, of warmth in relationship; and because we lack that love, that tenderness, that generosity, that mercy in relationship, we escape into mass action which produces further confusion, further misery. We fill our hearts with blueprints for world reform and do not look to that one resolving factor which is love.
